M²OLIE

The medical device research program „Mannheim Molecular Intervention Environment“ (M2OLIE) is one of ten winners of the federal competition “ Research campus- public-private partnership for Innovation”. It includes a federal government funding of up to €30 million over a period of up to 15 years to facilitate public-private cooperation between academia and industry to develop the “Interventional OR of the Future” for cancer treatment.

The approach used at the M2OLIE shifts perspective of cancer diagnosis and treatment from organ or tissue to cellular or smaller molecular structures. These procedures on molecular level not only require the combination of innovative examination and treatment methods. The modification of procedures in a today unknown intervention environment become necessary, involving not only medicine but also sciences, engineering, organisation- and information sciences.

The aim of the research campus M2OLIE is to develop this “Interventional OR of the future” and directly provide MedTech market and health care sector with the resulting innovations in products, systems and processes.

M2OLIE partners are several leading research institutions and companies in Mannheim and the region: the Institute of Medical Technology (IMT), four institutions of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, five institutes of Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Business Economics of Mannheim University, the Fraunhofer Institute of Production and Process Automation’s project group for Automation in Medical Engineering and Bioengineering and one department of the German Cancer Research Centre. MedTech industry partners are: Siemens Healthcare, KUKA Laboratories and Carl Zeiss Meditec as well as the Management of the Cluster Medical Technology of the city of Mannheim’s office for economic development.

M2OLIE requires complex solutions relying on different technologies. Additionally to the industry partners mentioned above who were already involved in the development process, all companies have the opportunity to benefit as a M2OLIE partner with their own complementary product development projects.
